Finding Her Passion
Bleue’s journey began at Highlands College, where she initially pursued art. However, uncertain about her future and with university not feeling like the right choice, she took a job in a salon at her mum’s suggestion. What started as a temporary role quickly turned into a passion, leading to an apprenticeship in hairdressing.
“It sounds awful to say that I just kind of fell into it, but actually, it was the best thing to do… I really don’t know what I would do if I wasn’t a hairdresser.”
Learning Through Apprenticeships
Bleue emphasises the importance of blending real-world experience with formal education.
“With college, you need the exam side and the theory, but in an apprenticeship, you’re in a salon environment, watching and learning every day. You see how people do things differently, and you pick up skills in a way you wouldn’t in a classroom alone.”
One of her most memorable experiences during her training was participating in a hairdressing showcase. Events like these allowed her to explore the more creative side of hairdressing, reinforcing her love for the profession.
Gaining Global Experience
After completing her initial training, Bleue worked in a salon in Jersey for a year before deciding to travel. She took her skills to Australia, working in a salon there and gaining insight into different approaches to hairdressing.
“It was great to see different perspectives and techniques. When I returned to Jersey, I was able to bring back new skills and teach them to others.”
Developing Professional Skills
Throughout her career, Bleue has built a strong foundation in both technical and creative aspects of hairdressing. From mastering cutting and colouring techniques to understanding client consultations and salon management, her apprenticeship provided her with the essential skills to succeed in the industry.
She highlights the importance of adaptability and continuous learning in hairdressing.
“Trends change all the time, and you have to stay ahead. The skills you gain at college give you a great starting point, but working in a salon every day is what really helps you refine them and develop your own style.”
Advice for Future Apprentices
Now an established professional, Bleue works with apprentices daily and encourages them to be proactive and observant.
“Just watch as much as you can. Hairdressing is such a visual industry, and you learn by seeing. Don’t be afraid to ask questions—there’s always a reason why someone does something a certain way.”
The Importance of Apprenticeships in Jersey
Bleue believes apprenticeships play a vital role in the local economy.
“In hands-on industries like hairdressing, beauty, and electrical work, apprenticeships are where you really learn. While college provides crucial theoretical knowledge, real-world experience is invaluable. Especially in a small place like Jersey, these opportunities help people develop practical skills that keep businesses running.”
She also notes that apprenticeships can lead to global opportunities.
“I’ve worked abroad, and I know people who have travelled the world on cruise ships thanks to their skills. With AI and automation on the rise, hands-on jobs like hairdressing will always be in demand.”
